Growing up in Ohio proved not to be very exciting for the Oakleys, until the question of their religion became a prominent focus from their neighbors. It had to be that Damien's parents knew that their religion would eventually be a problem for their children because they made sure not to attach anything that would have indicated religion or race to their names and often times, helped their children avoid questions about it altogether. Damien's mother was born into the religion of Islam, both of her parents being from India but later relocating to Rotterdam. His father was born into the Christian faith but lost his way well into his teen years. Wafaa and Edward met in college, both of them attending Ohio State. The two bonded and Wafaa helped Edward find religion. The two of them were married shortly after the completion of their respective masters. The couple moved to Dayton after a year of marriage. There they welcomed three sons, much to Edward's own joy. They raised their children to follow a very strict path in life and believed that they must practice the teachings of the Qur'an down to the letter. The family journeyed back to India around the time Damien turned three years old and when they returned to America, Edward was even more emerged in the lifestyle that a lot of very traditional Muslims lived than he ever had been before. Within the household, Damien's father made most, if not all of the major decisions. Damien watched his father's behavior and felt the need to follow the lead of the man of the house.

During his elementary years, he found himself an outcast because of his strict upbringing. He was much more well behaved than other children his age and was quickly noted as a target for bullies. His strong belief in being peaceful helped him avoid any violent altercations throughout his years but his will to not be picked on put efforts of that kind to a very short end. Damien was always a fairly good student but as he climbed higher in his grade level, he began to seperate his life much more. His home life and his social life seemed to be drastically different and there was a fine line that was never crossed or allowed to overflow. September 11th attacks brought an immediate critiscm and negativity towards muslims and even in his hometown, the minority was affected. Even more, it became a secret of sorts that Damien felt he needed to hide though he remained that he wasn't particularly ashamed. He just didn't want to be a target. At home, he was a model example of someone who was full of faith but outside, he tended to keep the company of people and participate in things that his parents strongly disapproved of. Around the time that high school was coming to an end, there were several academic scholarships offered to him. The decision to attend UNC was based mostly on the fact that it would be a fresh start for him, some place that created a good distance from his home. Since starting there, he has stepped even further out of his element to finally feel like he fits in with a group of his peers.
